Structure Systems
WOODBURY SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE
spring 2019
INSTRUCTOR: Stephen Marshall

This studio explores structure, technology, building systems and codes as design determinants, space makers, and form-givers. Building typologies, long-span structural systems, environmental systems, and electronic media are analyzed as they relate to design development.

HydroSoar

This project incorporates a tower with water activities that suits students from around the Los Angeles area. Located in Downtown Los Angeles on the corner of Broadway and 2nd Street. This proposal has various modes of transportation such as the metro rail, city buses, and mainly school buses. The program consists of 2 pools, one 25 meters, and the other 50 meters, a performance area/auditorium, an indoor and outdoor garden area, a food court, an aquarium, and an indoor/outdoor sports arena. The project relates to the site in the way that the main entrance is elevated from the ground by a ramp that is designated for buses to drop students off. The space under the elevated entrance serves as an administration space and an area where train riders go up the escalators to access the building. Furthermore, the structure of the building consists of columns that support thick concrete slabs; however, the floors that support both pools are thicker and are supported by thick trusses. In addition, the water system works in the building through a series of pipes that are connected to a heater and filter; the pipes connect with the pools and aquariums, both in the building and the underground train station which allow the water to be either cleaned or heated simultaneously.
