Studio 1b

WOODBURy SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE
Spring 2017
INSTRUCTOR: Heather Flood

This studio introduces scale, enclosure, architectural elements, spatial expressions, and program as form givers. An emphasis is placed in section, three-dimensional modeling, and orthographic documentation and writing. The project also expresses a clear understanding of how to diagram the basic principles of a design, and engage with site and program. Students were expected to demonstrate an understanding that architectural form isn’t monolithic, rather, is the synthesis of multiple independent parts.

Public Library
Plans//Section//Exploded Isometric View

This final phase of work introduces the concept of program through the action of diagramming. Once the phase started, students were asked to design a public library with given programs. This pertained critical thinking towards design process, thus took intake and produced a functional library within the given site located in Boyle Heights.

The design derives from the previous phase of the final bar where this library pertains opening space all around, allowing sunlight reflection and views to be visible.

Bar Models

This project was based on variations of a 12” x 2.625” x 1.875” bar, significantly showing the process of development with a systematic intention of patterns.

Bar #1

Model explored the system of creating a pattern through the increment of bass wood sticks. As soon as it’d reach up to sticks, the pattern would decrease back to one stick.

Bar #2

Model continue to explore the same system from bar #1, expect curvature and opening were explored to serve patterns all around the bar.

Final Bar

Final Bar became the form for the library, all curves from bar #2 with the merging of its reflection surfaces. The intention of this bar was to serve voids within each view of the bar, allowing sunlight to reflect the bar within different angels.
